We came to Africa for the animals. But we fell in love with the children. We came from all over: from California to Connecticut, from Wisconsin to Texas. Tourists on a great adventure to the heartland of the Masai Mara. What we didn’t know is that we’d take part of Africa home in our hearts. It was a side trip, really. An optional morning visit to a local school to meet some of the students. Our guide, Tony – Antonio Marangabassa – suggested we might bring some supplies: pens and pencils, paper, perhaps a soccer ball. Moved by the experience of touching Africa’s future, many of us wanted to do more. We listened as Tony and his wife Eunice told us of their dream of bringing a better education for Kenya’s children – particularly for girls, for whom schooling is still secondary to serving the farm and family. Experts estimate that there are 250,000-300,000 children living and working on the streets, with more than 60,000 of them in Nairobi. Kisumu, on Lake Victoria, and Mombasa, on the coast, also have large populations of street children. Street children face endless cruelties. Their rights have been violated many times by the adults who were supposed to protect them. In many cases these children are subject to sexual exploitation in return for food or clothes. Often, police detain and beat them without reason.

Every day our children face the risk of disease, malnutrition and hopelessness. In the Nyanza Province of Kenya where Maisha is located, the silent epidemic of HIV/AIDS has stolen the lives of mothers, fathers and children; leaving one out of every three households headed by a child.
