The history of Dilla University can be traced back to the year 1996 with its name, Dilla College of teachers’ education and Health sciences. The then Dilla College constituted two faculties: Faculty of teachers’ Education and Faculty of Health Sciences. However, in 2001, the College was included in the then newly emerging University – Debub University. In 2004 Dilla College once again went through another phase and sprung in to a full- fledged University by the councils of ministers regulation No 129/04. When Dilla college begun its activity as a college it had 12 departments with a total student population of less than 400, in a campus that was originally constructed for another purpose. All of the 51 Qalamino Special High School students of the first batch who sat for the 2001/2 Ethiopian School Leaving Certificate Examination have passed, 49 of them earned “Excellent” score. The students joined various Ethiopian universities and colleges – of whom majority of them kept excelling but few could not reach the finish line of undergraduate education easily. The scattering of those excellent students in the colleges and universities throughout Ethiopia and the failure of few ones to reach the finish line were not pleasant developments. Moreover, many individuals within the TDA realized early on that Qalamino Special High School would have limited contributions if the talented students of the School are not provided with best tertiary education. Hence, Mr Araya and colleagues came up with the idea of opening a science and technology institute around Mekelle.

Universal Medical Collage is a pioneer private owned health sciences college in Ethiopia. It was established and commenced its operation in 2002 G.c (1995 E.C.) with an initial outlay of birr 1.6 million.
