Duty Description

About MUK:

Makerere University is the oldest and premier University in Uganda which strives to becoming the leading institution for academic excellence and innovations in Africa

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Coordinate the admission, registration, progression and graduation of post graduate students.
  • Identify sources of and solicit for funds to support research and Graduate Training.
  • Coordinate research activities of the University and manage the research output (both electronic and print) in liaison with relevant University Units to increase its visibility and dissemination.
  • Strengthen links with other Universities and Research Institutions/Organizations on graduate research activities.
  • Oversee the implementation of institutional research.
  • Oversee the preparation of periodic reports to the University and its stake holders.
  • Actively promote and periodically review the University research agenda to reflect the priorities of the University and the Community.
  • Prepare an annual update on completed and on-going research and publications in the University.
  • Provide courses and organize workshops, seminars, symposia and provide support to conferences on research activities.
  • Institute Staff development programs to support research activities.
  • Responsible for the annual budget of the Directorate: develop, implement and regularly review the financial strategy for the Directorate.
  • Develop and nurture a culture of excellence in research at the Directorate and the University at large.
  • Manage and develop the digital Academic Record for research, students and related staff.
  • Develop and maintain authors/researchers’ intellectual property rights, copyright rights management and other legal issues especially as they apply to primary research in various forms in liaison with the University Library as mandated by the Legal Deposit Act

Required Qualifications

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant should hold a PhD at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor in any academic field.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years working experience, five (5) of which must be at Senior Managerial Level in a University / Research Organization.
  • High degree of integrity to safeguard the intellectual property of researchers/graduate students and research funds
  • Significant experience in research, publication, teaching and supervision at graduate level
  • High degree of collaboration and effective promotion of graduate training and research
  • Competent in the use of information technologies to support teaching, learning, research and digitization of research output
  • Proven experience in grant writing and administration
  • Proficient in short and long term research planning, policy development and assessment
  • Proven experience in leadership in higher Education/Research Organizations
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical ability
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Very good tactical and strategic planning skills
  • Age: Below 55 years
