About UGANDA BANKERS’ ASSOCIATION (UBA)

Secretariat

UBA established a permanent Secretariat beginning with the year 2000.

 

Registration

Uganda Bankers Association made a constitution signed by all members and was formally registered with the Registrar of Companies in 2002.

 

License to operate

UBA is registered and operates as an NGO. UBA is recognized in law by BoU Statute of 1993 as a Body to assess and recommend licensed commercial banks to be admitted in the Clearing House.

 

UBA Code of Conduct

To standardize and streamline service delivery to the Banking sector, the Banks voluntarily subscribed to a Code of Good Banking Practice starting 1996 and constantly revised to reflect changes in the environment.

 

Relationship with the Central Bank

 

The relationship with Bank of Uganda has tremendously improved resulting into monthly meetings at the level of the Governor and Chief Executives of Banks. Issues of policy and operation are discussed for the betterment of services in the economy. BoU played a considerable consultative role during the formation of the governing Acts – Financial Institutions Act 2004, Foreign Exchange Act 2004 and the relevant regulations etc.

 

Mechanization and the Operating Systems

 

UBA has played an effective role in the evolution of payment systems in the country and is currently boasting of hosting electronic payments and electronic switch payment systems.

 

Relationship with Policy makers

 

UBA has evolved into a respectable organ by all policy bodies and is continuing to assert itself in policy formulation.

 

Operating Environment

 

UBA has played an effective role in streamlining its operating environment in terms of Policy, Tax and reducing fraud in the system. To this end, UBA members have subscribed to a voluntary Code of Conduct.

 

Industrial Relations

 

Through monthly discussions, UBA has played an influential role in harmonizing industrial relations within the industry. For this reason, the industry has enjoyed stability for a long time now.

 

To reposition the financial services sector as a strong, vibrant and respected financial services industry in the East African region, the mandate of the Association was redefined in the UBA 2016-2018 Strategic Plan. The Core focus was to strengthen UBA Governance and Management Structures, stakeholder engagement, promote research and innovation, enhance UBA visibility to play a supportive role in the banking and wider sector in the economy.

 

As the Umbrella body of the Institutions licensed and regulated by Bank of Uganda with a current membership of 25 financial Institutions, UBA continues to boost a reputable and professional Banking Sector that strives to support Ugandans and ensure safe custody of clients and their resources with its member banks.

UBA structure and Governance

UBA is an association of the 25 member banks and the secretariat that is situated at Plot 10 Buganda Road in Kampala. The banks constitute the Governing Council and are represented by their Managing Directors or Chief Executive Officers

 

The UBA Governing Council appoints an Executive Committee that is comprised of 5 CEOs who oversee the Secretariat’s operations, programs and budget.

 

The UBA secretariat has a full-time staff compliment which manages day to day operations under the leadership of Executive Director, Mr. Wilbrod Humphreys Owor.
