About Kayonza Growers Tea Factory Ltd
Operating adjacent to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of Uganda’s oldest rainforests and home to 50 percent of the world’s mountain gorillas, Kayonza Growers Tea Factory is a for-profit community enterprise, 100 percent owned by its 7,205 smallholder tea farmers.
In 2015 Kayonza won the prestigious Equator Initiative Prize for its work on smallholder-led adaptation to climate change, integrated ecosystem restoration, reforestation, and eco-agriculture. It utilises this and its experience making high quality tea, to run its Centre of Excellence in Tea Quality and Climate Change Adaptation. Promoting environmental conservation and undertaking community based initiatives in Climate Change adaptation and mitigation to ensure sustainability of quality tea production.
