The mining sector has passed through different organizational structures. In 1977, it was established as the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Water Resources. Later in 1982, the Water Resource was separately structured as an independent Commission and the Ministry remained with the mining and energy sectors. However in 2002, the energy sector was divided into two and structured under the ministries of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Ministry of Infrastructure while the mining sector was organized alone as a Ministry of Mines. After that, in 2005 the mining and energy sectors were re-organized as the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
