The main producers of Argan oil in Morocco is that of co-operatives. They are privately run, government funded organisations, which provide jobs and some schooling for the illiterate Moroccan women that live near to the Argan forest. The women are paid per kilo of Argan seed that they produce. This is done by hand so it can take up to a day to crack 1 kilo worth of seed. The women are paid approximately 40 dirhams per kilo (£3) while on the shelf next to the women a 1 litre bottle of pure Argan oil retails to the tourists that visit them at aprox £130.
Often, this is the only opportunity that these women have to find some work, there is no welfare system in place in Morocco, so the majority of the time is their only income.
Morocco Link feel that these women deserve to have the right to feel empowered, and to have some independence, however we feel that now with the increased popularity of Argan oil, cooperatives have become profit making orientated, rather than considering the welfare of the women it employs.
