About South African Veterinary Association (SAVA)

About the South African Veterinary Association (SAVA)

The South African Veterinary Association (SAVA) is a professional organization representing veterinarians across South Africa. Established in 1920, SAVA originated from earlier provincial veterinary associations and now supports over 1,650 veterinary professionals. As a leader in veterinary advocacy, SAVA promotes scientific advancement, professional development, and animal welfare in South Africa.

Mission and Vision of SAVA

SAVA is dedicated to serving both the veterinary profession and the public by promoting excellence in animal health care and veterinary science. It endorses the "One Health" approach, emphasizing the link between animal, human, and environmental health. Through education, policy influence, and ethical leadership, SAVA contributes to national and international public health strategies.

Veterinary Education and Member Benefits

Members of SAVA benefit from access to key publications such as the Journal of the South African Veterinary Association (JSAVA) and VetNews magazine. These platforms offer continuing professional development (CPD), the latest veterinary research, case studies, and sector news. SAVA also facilitates special interest groups in fields like equine medicine, wildlife, ruminants, and public health, encouraging collaboration and specialization.

Community Veterinary Clinics (CVC) Program

SAVA manages the Community Veterinary Clinics (CVC) program to support veterinary services in underserved areas. These mobile and permanent clinics provide essential care such as rabies vaccination, parasite control, sterilization, and animal owner education. The CVC initiative is a cornerstone of SAVA’s mission to promote accessible veterinary care in South Africa and support animal welfare in low-income communities.

Advocacy for the South African Veterinary Sector

In response to a critical veterinarian shortage in South Africa, SAVA is actively advocating for improved retention, working conditions, and training opportunities. With only 60 veterinarians per million people—far below global norms—SAVA warns of risks to food safety, animal welfare, and public health. The association continues to engage government and stakeholders to protect the future of the veterinary profession.
