WUA is a private institution that was co-founded by two visionaries Professor Hope Cynthia Sadza, a former Public Service Commissioner and Dr Fay King Chung the former Minister of Education in Zimbabwe.  It was established in 2002 and granted a Charter by the Government of Zimbabwe in 2004, (Statutory Instrument 130 of 2004).  It is currently operating from its head office located at 549 Arcturus Road, Manresa Park, Harare.  It has satellite campuses in Bulawayo, Marondera, Kadoma and Mutare in Zimbabwe and an Open Distance Learning programme for students in Malawi and Zambia.

Africa Leadership and Management Academy (ALMA) is a leadership school that was born out of a crying need for leaders of integrity to spearhead Africa’s transformation from spiritual, social and moral bankruptcy as well as economic oppression. The idea of starting ALMA was the outcome of a meeting held in December 1994, at the Pan African Christian Leadership Assembly (PACLA II) in Kenya, hosted by the Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA). Delegates included Evangelical Christian leaders from all over the continent.

The development of Africa University is a consequence of the growth of United Methodism in Africa. The growth in membership and the emerging socio-economic and political needs in their countries led the African bishops of the United Methodist Church (UMC) to call on their church to invest in higher education provision in Africa

Arrupe Jesuit University (AJU) is an autonomous international academic institution, owned by the Zimbabwe Province of the Society of Jesus on the behalf of the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM).

In 1995, the Government made a decision to address the problem of the shortage of science teachers locally by setting up a University of Science Education. The Bindura University College of Science Education was established under the University of Zimbabwe. Arrangements were made for it to be housed at the Provincial Public Service Training Centre in Bindura. The College finally opened on 26 March 1996 with an intake of 125 students. Among the lecturing staff, were five lecturers from Cuba. This development coincided with and was partly, a consequence of the termination of the Zimbabwe-Cuba Science Teacher Training programme which had begun operating in the mid-1980s. The University Council then set up a Planning Committee, which was charged with the responsibility of transforming the College into a University within a period of less than five years.

The Catholic University of Zimbabwe is experiencing growth in line with its 2013-2022 strategic plan. The focus is to have 10 000 students by the end of the year 2022. The University now has 1 000 students. This is a 257% growth from 280 students at the beginning of 2013. Some of the growth has been realized due to the introduction of the very popular Block Release program for professionals where students can study for their B.A dual honours over a four year period at very competitive prices. This program is available at the Harare Campus as well as the Bulawayo, Mutare and Chinhoyi Campuses. The Bulawayo, Mutare and Chinhoyi Campuses are new and they also contributed to the phenomenal growth in student numbers as the decentralisation of Campuses has brought convenience for students across the Country and in the Region. Three more Campuses will be opened by the end of 2014.

Chinhoyi University of Technology was established as part of the recommendations of the Chetsanga Commission to devolve Chinhoyi Technical Teachers’ College and other similar colleges into degree – awarding institutions following the realization that technology is the key driver and central cog to industrial development and economic prosperity in Zimbabwe. The University started operating under the auspices of the University of Zimbabwe, in 1999 in what was then called the University of Zimbabwe Chinhoyi Degree Programme which offered two degrees; Production Engineering and Hospitality and Tourism. This led to the awarding of the Charter to operate as a fully fledged University, through the Chinhoyi University of Technology Act No. 15 of 2001; Chapter 25:23. At the helm was Professor C.M Nherera as the founding Vice-Chancellor. He immediately set off to do a sterling job tolay a solid foundation by establishing systems which have stood the test of time to this date. 

While the Great Zimbabwe University grows into a fully fledged institution of higher learning that will cover a full range of disciplines, it seeks to play a major role in the restoration and preservation of culture and in using culture as the basis upon which to build the future within the context of local and globalimperatives.The University’s curriculum reflects those elements that promote African culture, reinforce the dignity and self-confidence of Africans, and underpin the national unity of Zimbabweans. The birth of the Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) therefore heralds a new era in higher education, a period whose hallmark should see the Zimbabwe education system covering an increasing range of modern disciplines while being sufficiently and firmly anchored to local culture and restoring the confidence of indigenous Africans to apply and exploit their own creative genius in the modern competitive world. Gwanda State University is the brainchild of the government of Zimbabwe, created to fulfill the government policy to have a state university in each province.

Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) was granted degree awarding status in 2005 with the promulgation of the Harare Institute of Technology Act {Chapter 25:26}. Harare Institute of Technology is the hub of technology development and delivery of quality technology programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. HIT is Zimbabwe’s most energetic and responsive institute offering unparalleled educational opportunities for those seeking highest quality undergraduate, postgraduate and continuous professional development. It is at the forefront of growing Zimbabwe’s industrial base and natural resources beneficiation. History HIT was established in 1988 as a National Vocational Training Centre (NVTC). Overtime, it evolved into a Technical College offering courses in automotive, electrical, and mechanical engineering, producing artisans capable of operating and maintaining machinery in industry with little or no research or generation of new technology related knowledge. Holy Trinity College was founded in August 2003 by the following Congregations: Redemptorists CSsR, Franciscans OFM and Carmelites O Carm, Ronald McAinsh CSSR serving as Rector and Bursar, Joseph Mac Mahon OFM as Dean. There were 12 students. In August 2004 the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (CSSp) joined, bringing the number of students to 24. Classes were first conducted in the Redemptorist and Franciscan Communities. HTC was accommodated at Silveira House, a Jesuit Adult Education and Development Centre from 2005 – 2008. In August 2008 HTC began its sixth academic year at Nazareth House. This year (2011-2012) the anticipated student roll is 38. HTC was admitted as an associate College of the Catholic University in Zimbabwe (CUZ) on 22nd March, 2010. A Bachelor of Arts (in Theology) is awarded by CUZ on successful conclusion of the four year degree programme.

The vision of our University is to be an international premier university in research based knowledge, teaching and learning. Our mission is to contribute positively to research-based knowledge for the development of communities in keeping with our motto which is Building Communities through Knowledge LSU was established by an Act of Parliament (Chapter 25:25) of 2004 and started its operations in August 2005 with a pioneer group of 12 students enrolled to pursue a General Degree in Agricultural Sciences. Today the University has three faculties and above three thousand students cared for by a workforce of about three hundred employees and poised to grow to even greater heights. The University has had five successful graduation ceremonies and has graduated hundreds of students including diploma holders. 

The University’s mandate is to provide undergraduate and post graduate education in Applied Sciences (Engineering, Technology, Health Sciences, Mineral Sciences, Forestry Sciences, and Agricultural Sciences), Agribusiness and Tourism and Hospitality as to contribute to sustainable economic development of Zimbabwe through intensive utilization of land, value addition and beneficiation of the country’s mineral wealth and other natural resources. On its inception, the University commenced with four major faculties namely: Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Applied Science & Technology, Faculty of Agribusiness & Commerce and Faculty of Applied Social Sciences.

The Maranatha Christian University [MCU] is a degree-awarding Institution offering world-class teaching and learning facilities to local and international students not only in Science and Technology-related Programmes, but also in a whole universe of the Arts, Humanities, and Commercial Disciplines.

The idea of a University in the Midlands dates back to the foundation of the National University of Science and Technology when Gweru, which was identified as a possible site for a second university campus in the country, lost its bid to Bulawayo. Two other opportunities to host institutions of higher learning (the Open University and the Catholic University) were also missed by the Midlands Province, when the two universities went to Harare instead. It was in the midst of such disappointments that two initiatives gradually converged to give birth to what has since become the Midlands State University. His Excellency, the President R G Mugabe, on the nudging of the Provincial political leadership of the Midlands, accepted to the idea of a national university being built in the Midlands.

TCZ was chartered in July 1998 as the Theological College of Zimbabwe Trust. As an independent institution, the College maintains its interdenominational and multicultural distinctions, provides high-level, quality education and training for Christian ministry within the Southern African sub-region. TCZ reflects a diversity of nationalities and Church traditions as represented in the faculty and student body.

The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) in Harare, is the oldest and formerly largest university in Zimbabwe.[3] It was founded through a special relationship with the University of London and it opened its doors to its first students in 1952. The university has ten faculties offering a wide variety of degree programmes and many specialist research centres and institutes. The university is accredited through the National Council for Higher Education, under the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education. English is the language of instruction. Although once a very successful university, UZ has been facing challenges around 2008 and now the University is on a rebounding drive. Major work is being done to uplift the status of the University. Refurbishments are being carried out on the Main campus and many facilities are being upgraded to make the university an International Academic Brand. The university has faced criticism for awarding fraudulent degrees to members of the Mugabe regime

Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (ZEGU) is a brain child of the founder and president of Zimbabwe Assemblies of God Africa Forward in Faith (ZAOGA F.I.F), Professor Ezekiel Handinawangu Guti, who is also the Chancellor for the University. It is a private Christian University which started in May 2012. ZEGU is a degree awarding institution accredited by the Zimbabwe Council of Higher Education (ZIMCHE) offering internationally recognised degrees in various faculties.
