About Structural Intervention for Community Advancement (SICA) Education Uganda

SICA is a non profit organization aimed at transforming youth to responsible adults capable of contributing towards the development of their communities.

Our approach is through making sure that communities acquire the capacity to mentor their own youth by viewing them as actors partners leaders.

In the communities where we work our focus is more on community change other than individual change. It is focused on positive youth development and works with many partners to see that communities view youth as assets to be developed not problems to be solved.

MISSION

To promote strong communities that help transform youth into responsible adults through developmental youth centered programs that are holistic in-nature.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To help youth realize their role in developing the community and realize smooth transition to responsible adulthood
  2. To provide possible solutions to young people on health issues.
  3. To promote innovation among youth for solutions that foster community development.
  4. To assist youth develop the kind of skill needed to make positive, healthy decisions both now and in the future.
  5. To carry out research on the issues that hinder positive youth development as well as ascertaining the competences a youth requires to thrive in developing countries.

OUR CONVICTIONS

  1. That all youth are assets to be developed but not problems to be solved.
  2. That communities have the responsibility of developing youth to a level of independence and in turn contribute to the development of the community
  3.  Every youth has a right to know and gain competence skills that can help them transform to responsible adults
  4. Communities should count on youth for development.
  5. We believe that communities have the ability to poses at promise youth and to avoid at risk youth for positive youth development.

HOW WE DEVELOP THE FIVE C’S IN YOUNG PEOPLE

COMPETENCE

  • Teach them how to be committed through modeling, role play and supportive feed back.
  • Teaches them decision making through challenging activities that require taking decisions with mentorship.
  • Take them through the personal enhancement project that fosters self help skills for youth to survive .
  • Engaging them in different activities that improve different skills that raise their competence like How to learn , debates, public speaking . physical exercises, financial skills, leadership skills and many others.This is backed by motivating them to freely and willingly participate in the transformation process.

CONFIDENCE

  • Help them develop their to do list and also train in the norms and owning a plan of life.
  • We engage them in competitions of different activities like sports, memory, public speaking and so on.
  • We train them to orient new members in the community and also leadership, they become ambassadors
  • We provide them opportunities to use their voice with others
  • We train them how to take charge of their health and that of the community in general.
  • We notice and reign force when youth are using pro - social skills i really appreciated you asking the girls to gather for group formation in such a respectful mature manner.

CARING AND COMPASSION

  • Teach youth skills to care for themselves by setting boundaries and self advocacy.
  • Teach youth how to resolve conflict with understanding and compassion
  • Identify opportunities for youth to participate in community changing activities like work camps.
  • Exposing them to the realities their agreements face out there and giving them a chance to do charity.
  • Notice and reinforce when youth are treating others in a kind/ caring manner.

CHARACTER

  • Assist young people identify their strength and how they have utilized them in their life
  • We create character awareness in youth and let them know that their lack of character is not their character.
  • We provide avenues for self discovery and awareness, such as talent development programs.
  • We train pieces of character through character centered sport training.
  • Begin with a ritual in our get togethers such as one way that i helped another person today was by ....

CONNECTION

  • We designed clubs that enable youth work in groups and also teach them team work.
  • We train and encourage them to do peer pt peer mentorship which builds ever lasting connections.
  • We plan opportunities where youth can become part of a large community . by giving back. it could be volunteering or any social activity that bring youth together like retreats.

CONTRIBUTION

  • After all this youth are now expected to be able to add to the grow and development of the communities-where they live and the country at large. More still, we expect them to move towards independence, in other words we want to see a youth stop being a dependent at the right time and as well manage his life better.
