About CENTRAL ORGANISATION OF FREE TRADE UNIONS -uganda (COFTU)

COFTU is the Central Organisation of Free Trade Unions, Uganda (also known as the Confederation of Free Trade Unions) founded in 2003 at Kampala, Uganda, in East Africa. It became established by an Act of Parliament, the Labour Unions Act, 2006, as a “registered federation” of labour unions under the Act. Section 62(3) of the Labour Unions Act, 2006, provides …“The Central Organisation of Free Trade Unions (COFTU) existing at the commencement of this Act shall continue in existence and shall be deemed to be a registered federation of labour unions under this Act.” COFTU is the most representative National federation of labour unions (National Centre) in Uganda. A total of 40 labour unions are registered in Uganda by the ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development of which 24 are affiliated to COFTU. Activities of COFTU are implemented through the Secretariat located in Kampala and regional offices located in the towns of Hoima, Gulu, Arua, Mbarara and Mbale.

COFTU is a National labour center/ federation of labour unions founded in 2003 and became established by an Act of Parliament, the labour Unions Act of 2006 as a registered federation of labour Unions. it brings together & co-ordinates activities of the 24 affiliated national unions & 112 District Workers' Forums representing all categories of workers in Uganda; from the Public, Private, formula and in-formula sectors with grassroots structures country wide. 

COFTU OBJECTIVES

  • To advance, protect, promote and defend the social and economic interests of workers. 
  • To serve as a consultant on all matters relating to workers and labour Union affairs.
  • To formulate policies relating to the proper management of the labour Unions and the general welfare of workers.
  • To plan for and administer in collaboration with other interested bodies or persons workers' education programs.
  • To coordinate and supervise the activities of Labour Unions.
  • Represent workers and serve as a link between labour unions, the government and international organizations in all matters of mutual interest.
  • Empower and transform potential and working people economically.
