About AKABANGA Chili Oil

Akabanga Hot Chili

Akabanga hot chili oil sauce is from Rwanda. The recipe consists of 80% fresh chili pepper and 20% vegetable oil. Its heat does not linger in the mouth like many hot sauces out there. Its taste is truly amazing and has a unique flavor.

The word “akabanga” means “little secret” in Rwanda's official language. Rwandan businessman and Food entrepreneur Sina Gérard first came up with the unique chili oil recipe back in earlier 2001.

He reported that his very first customers that rushed for the product were mostly women who often made their daily grocery shopping at the local Kigali popular market where he sold foodstuffs.

Surprisingly these women were also those that came up with the name Akabanga for the new product because they firmly and truly believed that there was a special and secret ingredient in it. Their suspicion was grew from comments made by their husbands.

Apparently the now famous chili oil made their husband particularly happy and overly excited whenever they used Akabanga in their meal.
Some men were reported to have been disappointed and sometimes vey angry if there was no Akabanga at diner table !
Used on a wide varieties of dishes , the chili oil is great on anything including eggs, meat, fish, stews, salads and soups. The oil is made of 80% extract of mix varieties of African grown fresh chili peppers and 20% of vegetable oil (sunflower or olive).
