Our Journey in Botswana

When it was licensed on the 29th March 1998, Mascom promised to have the network on the air to coincide with the then US President Bill Clinton's visit to Botswana, introducing the network with anticipation for continuous success.

Mascom has maintained the tradition and introduced cutting edge innovative products and services. The following year Mascom spread its wings to introduce international roaming and launched SMS (Short Message System) in 2000. Kwik - recharge which is the most technologically advanced method of recharging through cellphone was launched in 2003.

In 2004 Mascom was the only Mobile operator in Botswana to be ISO Complaint; these international standards were qualified once again in 2006 with the Environmental Management System: ISO 140001:2004 certification and ISO 9001:2000 Certification. In the same year cellphone banking was launched, another Mascom’s commitment to service excellence and convenience to our customers.

2007 saw the introduction of GPRS/EDGE network coverage that spans 95% of the population. Mascom was the first mobile operator to launch 3G/HSDPA covering the cities of Gaborone in 2008 and Francistown in 2009.

In June 2012, Mascom announced the aggressive expansion of 3.5G technology, which upon completion will see close to 80% of Botswana’s population enjoying the benefits of super-fast broadband access, with speeds of up to 21 Mbps. Concurrent to the 3.5G deployment, the 2.5G network was also upgraded to increase capacity by over 50%. At the same time Mascom launched the 4G LTE pilot project which positioned Mascom among the first in the SADC region to announce the advanced technology.

On the same year, Mascom launched the Mascom Innovation Centre, a state of the art building that hosts the Data centre which is the hub of the Mascom network country wide and the Energy Centre which deploys ultimate redundancy and ensures service continuity. The architecture of the Innovation Centre reflects the company’s drive towards innovation in the cellular communications field. The centre will increase ICT knowledge and serve as a platform to allow citizens to have access to cutting edge telecommunication technology.

•  How do I register?

Subscribers that wish to participate in the Khumo Points program should register for the programme by dialling the short code *157#. Only subscribers registered for the program are qualified to earn and rebate points through the program.

Mascom reserves the right to ask subscribers to confirm such Khumo Points program registration from time to time. Failure to do so may result in Khumo Points balance loss, in part or in whole, leading to the removal of such subscribers from the loyalty program.

• How do I accumulate points?

Points are accumulated as P1 earns 1 point.

For Postpaid subscribers this means that for every P1 that is used on voice calls gives the subscriber 1 point. Points are not accumulated on data services, and on monthly rental fees and any other such related charges.

For Prepaid subscribers this means that for every P1 recharged gives the subscriber, 1 point.   Bonus airtime, Nzamele, Freebies, ETU, data packages and negative balances do not generate or accumulate points

For corporate accounts usage is based on the individual users; Loyalty Points will be allotted to the individual users and not to the corporate account itself.

• Can I transfer my accumulated points?

Points are not transferable when migrating from Prepaid to Postpaid, or from Postpaid to Prepaid. Unredeemed points will be forfeited. Points cannot be transferred or combined between lines, accounts or SIM Cards, and can only be used to rebate from the current available catalogue. Points are forfeited when terminating a contract. Subscribers will not be allowed to rebate points after, or when terminating their contract

•  How do I know how many points I have?

For Postpaid subscribers, accumulated points show on the bottom of the tax invoice page in the monthly bill.

For Prepaid subscribers, accumulated points can be determined by dialing 13456. This line is free for the first enquiry of the day and will charge 10t for every extra enquiry made within the day.

•  How do I redeem my points?

Browse Browse Khumo Points Catalogue and choose your redemption

Prepaid subscribers must provide their identification document (OMang for citizens of Botswana, and passport for expatriates) when redeeming prizes. Airtime can be redeemed by calling *157#.

Corporate and Business Postpaid subscribers must provide a written request using the company’s letterhead, and signed by a representative with legal authority. The letter must indicate the mobile numbers redeeming prizes, and the person collecting the prizes must provide their ID.

Individual Postpaid subscribers must provide their identification document (OMang for citizens of Botswana, and passport for expatriates) when redeeming prizes.

Each line (number) redeems its own points. Points from different lines cannot be combined.

Postpaid subscribers must be active (not temporary, nor permanently deactivated), and all account payments must be up to date to redeem Loyalty Points. Points earned on Postpaid for a specific month will not be accessible until the specific invoice under which they were earned is fully paid.
