Minoterie des Grands Lacs MURAMVYA was established in 1980 and today processes 12,000 tonnes of wheat per year. Expansion work should allow early 2013 to raise these results to 33,000 tonnes per year. Burundi does not produce enough wheat, the factory is forced to import it from Australia, the United States or Canada. Its production is then sold exclusively in Burundi and is used either for the manufacture of breads and donuts (flour), or for that of animal food (with bran). At the time of its installation on this hill, from where one enjoys a remarkable view on the whole of the city of Muramvya, a controversy arose because in reality it was the site of an ancient enclosure of the mwami Mwezi Gisabo.
