Growth and production should go hand in hand, but countries in the continent are struggling to make that a reality. It therefore appears there’s need for African economies to diversify the agents of growth in Africa in order to curb existing inequalities, youth unemployment and women’s unemployment, notwithstanding the formalizing the informal sector. This issue is, among other things being debated between African and diaspora economists gathered in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

“The informal sector is a fight for all of us because the informal sector plays a key role in the African economy, so we have to act together to formalize the informal sector,” says Victor Harison, AU’s commissioner of economics affairs.

Samouel Beji, a research professor at the University of Sousse, Tunisia says: “We need to diversify economies, to industrialize. Also, try to move from primary to secondary or tertiary and to improve governance indicators to ensure the sustainability and stability of growth in African economies”

Indeed improving good governance indicators is key, but not forgetting qualified training for managers.
