Women Rights Advocacy & Women Empowerment
It is alarming to note that the institutions supposed to protect citizens’ rights are the ones violating them, with women as major victims. Even with the marginal inclusion of women in politics and other spheres, the continued marginalization of women in numerous areas has the potential to undermine the achievements registered to date. Incidences of unacceptable forms of gender based violence targeting women at all levels (from domestic – political) are numerous and many have gone unchecked. Unfortunately, the people of Uganda lack an on-going comprehensive civic education programme educating about Women’s’ Rights and although some progress has been made in designing and implementing measures to eliminate discrimination against women through the legal and policy framework, women in Uganda still continue to be victims of discrimination and harmful practices.
We at Seeds of Hope recognize that without the necessary education and targeted media awareness programmes, the low literacy levels among women that impede their access to social services and their participation in economic activities will facilitate the high prevalence of poverty, the very slow law reform process, and the ineffective mechanisms for the enforcement of women’s rights.
We are tackling this from a grassroot level:-
through an ongoing community based adult literacy programme that is providing basic education to women and men alike. This has opened for us a channel to share and discuss with the women of the Lukuli Community about their rights as women, the choices open to them in cases of abuse, and the diverse opportunities and possibilities open to them especially in the economic arena to help them support their families and provide a more equal footing in the home as a valuable and key financial player.
Through implementation of a project proposal whose activities are aimed at empowering women and raising the dignity of women in Uganda. (This proposal has been finalized and is pending sponsorship).
Identifying women and/or young girls to support financially in order for them to complete key stages in the academic arena including Uganda Certificate of Education, Uganda Advanced Level of Education and/or University level of education. This support is wholly dependent on availability of sponsorship.
The specific objectives of the women projects are to empower women and young girls economically and educationally to enable them participate in development activities, initiate the community to advocate for support and education of girls, to increase the enrollment of girls in the school, to change the life of poor women and their families through revolving fund provision and empower their households economically.
