Helping People with Different Abilities
The inaccessible physical environment is one of the greatest challenges in Uganda faced by persons with physical disabilities in particular, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in general. Because of this, PWD’s are denied the right to access services enjoyed by others. . This has largely contributed on the higher side towards unemployment, injustice, discrimination, low levels of literacy, exclusion, isolation and their inadequate involvement in community activities.
The findings from our interface with PWDs, service providers, policy makers are that the majority of people are so ignorant about the accessibility needs of PWDs and disability.
Many of the buildings and toilets are inaccessible because of the use of mainly stairs without an alternative lift/route, and narrow entrances to corridors, doors, toilets and latrines. The facilities constructed to be used by PWDs like ramps and toilets have been found to be less or not useful at all since they were not constructed basing on ideal standards. In many cases, even these standards are not known.
It is for this reason and in compliance with national and international legislation that Seeds Of Hope will spearhead the development of Accessibility Standards.
This will be done through:
⇒ Long term impact project entitled “Discovering the talents of People with Different Abilities”. Project proposal is finalized and awaits partners to begin.
Objectives include:
To increase the participation of different categories of PWDs in the decision making at local government levels.
To increase assertiveness of PWDs in challenging injustices.
To decrease abuse of PWDs rights at all levels.
To increase equitable distribution of quality services and benefits to PWDs.
