The university is located in the town of Akobo, in Akobo County, Jonglei State, in northeastern South Sudan, close to the International border with Ethiopia. This location lies approximately 450 kilometres (280 mi), by road, northeast of Juba, the capital and largest city in the country

Dr. John Garang Memorial University of Science and Technology is a government founded institution of higher learning. It bears the name of late the Dr. John Garang de Mabior, the founder and long-term leader of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A). Dr. John Garang pioneered the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) with National Congress Party (NCP) under the leadership of H.E President Omar Hassan Ahmed Al Bashir of the Republic of Sudan.

The concept of establishing Rumbek University was first adopted in February 2006 when, the president of the Republic of Sudan at that time, Omer Al-Bashir visited Rumbek. He pledged to build a university in the town, making the new university the fourth (4th) public university in South Sudan (then Southern Sudan). Subsequently the project was discussed and approved at the Sudanese federal level in Khartoum and at the regional level in Juba. The university was subsequently established in 2010 as a joint project between the federal government in Khartoum and the Southern Government in Juba. Following South Sudan's independence in July 2011, the university is now the sole responsibility of the government of South Sudan (GOSS).

St. Mary's College was founded in 2008, as a collaborative effort between the South Sudanese Ministry of Gender, Social Welfare and Religious Affairs and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Juba, with the cooperation of the Volunteers' Organization for International Co-operation OVCI la Nostra Famiglia www.ovci.org (INGO which has been continuously working in South Sudan since 1983). Enrollment is open to all eligible citizens of South Sudan. The Vice Chancellor of the university is Paulino Lukudu Loro, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Juba.

South Sudan Institute (SSI) is dedicated to creating sustainable self-sufficiency for returning refugees in communities throughout South Sudan beginning with a replicable model program in Duk Payuel. Background A thriving healthcare clinic, primary school and library have already been established in the village, defining it as a center for peace and a prime location for further development. In 2007, Lost Boys leader John Dau, now a dual citizen of the US and Sudan, established the John Dau Foundation and built a health care clinic in Duk Payuel. Since then, clinic staff has provided life saving medical care to over 33,000 patients, trained more than 100 Sudanese and conducted vaccination programs for neighboring villages. In that same year, John spoke at Yorktown High School in Arlington, Virginia. UBG is a public university. The university was established in 1991, in response to the educational needs of the citizens of South Sudan. It is one of the five (5) public universities in the country; the other four (4) being: (1) Juba National University in Juba, (2) Rumbek University in Rumbek (3) University of Northern Bahr El-Ghazal in Aweil and (4) Upper Nile University in Malakal. The Vice Chancellor of Bahr El-Ghazal University is Professor Timothy Telar.

The university was established in 2011, as a government-supported institution of higher educacation, to address the educational requirements of the following communities in the following order: (a) Northern Bahr el Ghazal State (b) Bahr el Ghazal Region (c) Southern Sudan (d) Interested Qualified International Students. The first class of students are expected to begin classes in October 2011. Rumbek University scheduled to open its doors in October 2011. The first Vice Chancellor of the university is Professor John Apuruot Akec. The university is a public university.
