Question. Being a regional Bank, does EADB play any role regional integration?
  • Answer: EADB plays a major role in regional integration by supporting projects that cut across the Member States borders. Such projects are mainly in infrastructure sector (energy, transport and telecommunication). The ownership of the Bank also brings together the three governments of East Africa. The Governing Council of the Bank comprises the three Finance Ministers of the Republic of Kenya, Untied Republic of Tanzania and Republic of Uganda. The Bank’s lending activities spread across the three countries. The Bank’s regional operation enhances economic activities in the region, hence promoting regional trade. With revitalisation of regional integration through the signing of the East African Customs Union Protocol, EADB has an opportunity to step up support to more viable regional enterprises. The Bank has already expressed desire to participate in financing energy projects stipulated in the region’s power master plan which proposes to interconnect the three countries’ grids.

  • Answer: EADB has sufficient resources to meet its clients’ financial requirements. The Bank sources for lending funds from its development partners through lines of credits. Further, the Bank also mobilises local resources by issuing bonds. In cases where clients’ requirements go beyond EADB’s pockets, the Bank can offer syndication and co-financing arrangements.

  • Answer: EADB’s primary objective is promoting development. As such, the Bank is not primarily profit driven. EADB therefore offers products that are geared towards advancing development. The Bank does not operate retail-banking services such as savings and current accounts (products commonly offered by commercial banks). EADB’s portfolio is dominantly Medium/Long-Term loans.
