How it all started -The Christian Brothers were founded in Ireland in the early 1800’s by a widower called Edmund Rice. He was a middle-aged man, called by the Holy Spirit to devote his life and wealth to remedying the very difficult political situation that had occurred in Ireland, especially in the field of education. The youth at the time were subjected to humiliation, demoralisation as well as being forced to adopt a foreign religion. In 1800 Edmund Rice, who had now handed over his wealthy business after deciding to follow Christ in religious life, opened his first school in a stable in New Street, Waterford, Ireland. The tree had been planted. His concern for the marginalised, especially the young people, did not stop at their education. He employed a baker and tailor to feed and clothe those who attended the school, visited the imprisoned and performed all the other corporal works of mercy. Others joined him and together they became the first Christian Brothers.

Milton School started life on the 25th of July 1910. It was named after Sir William Milton (the administrator of the BSAC) and initially located on Borrow Street, Bulawayo (now Parirenyatwa Street). Petra College was started in 1986 as an idea and prayerful concept delivered as a motion at the AGM of a local Church. Queen Elizabeth School originally accommodated the first government school in 1898. The buildings were later used as a junior school and in January 1940, the Girls’ modern School was founded. Once the Queen’s permission had been obtained, the name was changed to Queen Elizabeth, after Queen Elizabeth, the consort of King George VI. Miss Robson, the Head, at the time wanted the name for the school because she felt the Queen had those qualities that she would like to see in her girls – simplicity, sincerity and kindness. During the Royal tour in 1947, the Queen made a surprise visit to the school in 1952. The school, which previously had offered a general course with no external examinations became a school, which offered both academic and general courses. The present School badge was designed to coincide with the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
