Africare a été créée en 1970, durant une grave sécheresse qui sévissait au Sahel, en Afrique de l’Ouest. Ce fut la plus terrible sécheresse de la région en 50 ans. Les fondateurs se composaient d’un petit groupe de dirigeants africains et américains et de spécialistes du développement; ils avaient peu d’argent mais un grand attachement pour l’Afrique; ils prirent donc l’engagement d’améliorer l’avenir de ce continent.
