Northlea was opened on the 29th of January 1952 under the name of Bulawayo North Secondary School. The initial enrolment consisted of 37 boys and 53 girls all in form 1. The headmaster, Mr H. J. Broughton was assisted by four members of staff. The school building comprised of five classrooms only. The grounds were still very much untouched and thick bush surrounded the classrooms.As with all new school parents, staff and pupils were faced with the gigantic task of developing gardens, sports fields and other facilities. Today’s developed school with its swimming pool, hall sports pavilion, tennis and squash courts, basketball courts and other sporting facilities, and its own school bus are a reminder of some of the projects embarked upon by P.T.As. (Now known as SDCs) Over the years there have been many changes. The school premises have been greatly added to and in 1975 a hostel was built providing boarding facilities for 104 pupils.
