Masvingo Polytechnic was established by the Manpower Planning and Development Act 1984 (No. 36), and amended in 1994 Chapter (28:02), in 1987 by renting 2 buildings in the high density suburb of Mucheke offering National Diploma courses in Secretarial and Accounting. In 1988, the Polytechnic moved to its present site, adjacent to the provincial capital, Masvingo City, and 25km from the historic Great Zimbabwe ruins. In 1992, Engineering Departments such as Electrical, Mechanical and Automotive were opened. In 1993, disciplines such as Art and Design, Clothing, Hairdressing and Chemical were introduced. Meanwhile the Division of Commerce went on to offer Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Marketing and also introduced Computer Studies, Storekeeping leading to the offering of Higher National Diploma in Secretarial Studies in 1999.
