Vitamin C It is a potent water soluble anti-oxidant, also known as ascorbic acid, is necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues. Vitamin C plays a role many oxidative and other metabolic reactions, e.g. hydroxylation of proline and lysine residues of protocollagen. Severe vitamin C deficiency leads to scurvy commonly seen in malnourished infants, children, elderly alcoholics and drug addicts.

Indications:
Treatment of scurvy, postoperatively, anaemia, to acidity urine U.T.I, Common cold, asthma, cancer, atherosclerosis, formation of collagen, absorption of iron, the immune system, wound healing, and the maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth.

Mechanism of Action
Ascorbic acid (vitamin c) is reversibly oxidized to dehydroascorbic acid (vitamin c) in the body. These two forms of the vitamin are believed to be important in oxidation-reduction reactions.
Side effects
Rebound scurvy stoppage, increased risk of urinary oxalate stones.
Contra indications:
Vitamin C tablet is contra indicated in those patients with a known hypersensitivity to it or any of its ingredients or hydroxyzine and in women who are breast feeding their children. Vitamin C tablet should be given with caution to patients with hyperoxaluria since large doses may results in formation of renal calcium oxalate calculie.
Drug interactions
Limited evidence suggests that ascorbic acid (vitamin c) may influence the intensity and duration of action of bishydroxycoumarin.
