Matabeleland Animal Rescue & Equine Sanctuary (MARES Zimbabwe)

Matabeleland, 62 Townsend Road , Suburbs, Bulawayo
Contact Phones : +263712214541,+263292250728
Web Address :www.mareszim.org
Matabeleland Animal Rescue & Equine Sanctuary was originally opened just over eighteen years ago under the name Matabeleland Horse Rescue. It was a Voluntary Private Organisation formed in the early 2000’s during the land claims where many farmers were kicked off their farms and were unable to take their animals, including horses. In 2018, after assisting in the closure of a donkey abattoir in Bulawayo, we registered our welfare to include Donkeys and our welfare name became Matabeleland Animal Rescue & Equine Sanctuary (MARES). Our focus is going into the rural areas on education/outreach clinics as well as changing ill fitting harnesses for our humane padded harnesses and teaching donkey welfare. In Bulawayo our sanctuary, which is actually a rehabilitation centre, is primarily for injured or confiscated donkeys where, if too injured to go back into work, are found loving forever homes as pets.

Matusadona National Park

-, Matusadona National Park, Zimbabwe
Contact Phones : -,-
Matusadona National Park gets its name from the rolling Matusadona hills that form part of its water rich landscape. Flanked by Lake Kariba in the north, and two perennial rivers, the Ume and the Sanyati, this remote and rugged park is the first in Zimbabwe to fall under the African Parks mandate. Proclaimed a National Park in 1975, it was once a conservation stronghold for African elephant and black rhino, and a sought-after tourism destination. But over the years, financial resources slowly diminished and poor management impacted the parks’ wildlife. Limited road networks and manpower left some areas entirely unpatrolled resulting in rampant poaching which virtually eliminated the black rhino population and severely reduced the elephant population. While Matusadona’s wildlife has suffered, fortunately its integrity as a wilderness landscape has remained undiminished, providing an exceptional opportunity for this park to be restored.

“Wild is Life” has a long history and has grown exponentially over the past twenty years. From the humble beginnings of a few rescued wild orphans in our back yard, we have grown into the quality Animal Sanctuary that we are today. We are a genuine Wildlife Sanctuary, catering for injured, orphaned and rescued wildlife, as well as Endangered and Specially protected species. Our beginnings can be traced back to 1998, when we only had small creatures such as duiker and mongoose. We then grew substantially during the rocky and disturbing times of Zimbabwe, where we opened our arms to numerous species of wild mammals that needed a safe haven from the chaos that was prevailing. “Wild is Life” consists of two branches, namely The Wild is Life Trust, and the Zimbabwe Elephant Nursery.
