A generic drug is a drug identical or equivalent to that of a brand (called drug originator), but produced and sold under its International Nonproprietary Name (INN which is the chemical name of the molecule) or under another trade name (generic brand). Contrary to some beliefs, the generic drug is not an infringement of the original drug. The generic is an excellent opportunity for developing countries struggling to cope with public health expenditure. Generic drugs cost 2-100 times cheaper than the original drug.
